The celebration took place this morning for the admission of Cardinal Angelo De Donatis, Vicar General of His Holiness for the Diocese of Rome, to the Order of Malta with the dignity and rank of Bailiff Grand Cross of Honour and Devotion in the presence of the Lieutenant of the Grand Master, Fra’ Marco Luzzago.
The cardinal received the insignia with attribution to the Grand Priory of Rome in the Magistral Palace chapel during Holy Mass. Also present were the Grand Chancellor of the Order of Malta, Albrecht Boeselager, and the Order’s Ambassador to the Holy See, Antonio Zanardi Landi.
Born on 4 January 1954 in Casarano, Apulia, the cardinal was ordained a priest in 1980 in the Diocese of Nardò-Gallipoli. On 26 May 2017, Pope Francis appointed him Vicar General of His Holiness for the Diocese of Rome. On 28 June 2018, Pope Francis created him cardinal during the Consistory.
