The new operating theatres in the Order of Malta’s Hospital Centre in Dakar, soon to be officially inaugurated, are already in use. Surgeon have successfully performed the first two orthopaedic operations (hip and elbow).
Built by the Order’s French Hospitaller works in 1967 as a specialist leprosy unit, the centre has been extensively renovated to meet Senegal’s growing needs for orthopaedic surgery, taking advantage of over 40 years of experience. Important expansion and modernization works for over a million euro have been carried out since 2007. It now contributes to the country’s public health service.
37 people work in the centre, including 2 surgeons and 18 nurses, and it has 45 beds. Its operating theatres meet European standards and 10-15 operations are performed weekly.
