Reduction of infant mortality

Reduction of infant mortality
06/10/2008

In Cambodia, Malteser International is engaged in reducing the high rate of infant mortality by improving childbirth services, especially in rural areas. The Order of Malta’s Relief Corps cooperates, in various villages, with TBAs, Traditional Birth Attendants, and MSGs, Mother Support Groups, local organizations that help women before and after birth. Malteser International also organises training courses for midwives in local health centres.

To tackle the issue of infant and maternal mortality, Malteser International is also involved in a health care financing system. The aim is to guarantee health care for those who are too poor to afford it, mainly those living and working in rural and remote areas.

Malteser International is thus fostering community based health insurance, to guarantee that the high percentage of needy people has access to health care. The insurance has a premium amounting to 50% of the subsidized loan and the distribution of part of the future revenues through the microcredit tool.
