An official visit of the Grand Master to the city of Crotone (in Calabria, Italy) was held from May 23rd May 25th on the occasion of the dedication of a square and an obelisk in the town to Blessed Gerardo Sasso, founder of the Order of Malta. The monument, surmounted with an octagonal cross, was blessed by Cardinal Ignace Moussa I Daoud, Prefect of the Congregation of Oriental Churches, in the presence of civil, religious and military leaders.
The Grand Master was accompanied by a large delegation of Ambassadors from the Order and from other accredited states.

The birth of the Order of St. John dates back to around 1048. It was under the leadership of Blessed Fra’ Gerard, founder and first Master, that the religious community became a lay religious order.
