A team of 80 doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and volunteers recently returned from a medical mission in the Dominican Republic where – sponsored by the Cuban Association of the Order of Malta – they treated some 800 patients at the ILAC Centre (Centre for Integral Health) in Santiago, the second largest city of the country.

The team included specialists in Cardiology, Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Pediatrics, Gastroenterology, Urology, Emergency Medicine, Radiology, General Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Dentistry, and Anesthesia. 48 complicated surgical procedures, on both adults and children, and over 75 ultrasonographic studies including cardiac echo’s were performed by the medical staff during the 4 day mission.

For nearly 20 years, the Cuban Association, headquartered in Miami, has been organizing the missions that, in addition to offering healthcare consultations, also entail the distribution of high-quality medicines for free.

Initiator and driving force behind these medical missions is Jose Joaquin Centurion, medical surgeon and Hospitaller of the Cuban Association of the Order of Malta.

The next mission in the Dominican Republic is already scheduled for March 2024.
