To offer a smile to a sick child by fulfilling his or her greatest dreams. This is the aim of Make a Wish to the Sovereign Order of Malta, the initiative addressed to Serbian children and adolescents living in the areas struck by the violent floods in 2014.
Promoted by the Sovereign Order of Malta’s embassy in Serbia, the fundraising event was organized by Prince Michael of Yugoslavia on 19th June last in Monte Carlo with 140 personalities from Serbia, Monaco, Italy and France participating, including Prince Alexander II and Princess Catherine Karadjorgevic as well as the Archbishop of Belgrade, Mgrs. Stanislao Hocevar.
Prince Albert II of Monaco and the Grand Chancellor of the Order, Albrecht Boeselager, expressed their appreciation for the initiative.
The Serbian children and adolescents sent some 1,800 wishes to the embassy in Belgrade, managed by Ambassador Alberto di Luca. An ad hoc commission – chaired by Prince Alexander II – will select the wishes and present them on 13th October for the feast of Blessed Gerard, founder of the Sovereign Order of Malta. Some of most touching requests sent to the Belgrade embassy were for wheelchairs and other equipment for the disabled and, naturally, adolescents’ classic wishes, such as iPads, computers and mobile phones. There was even the wish to meet the Serbian Novak Djokovic, number one tennis player in the world.
