The Alliance Orders of St. John together with the Sovereign Military Order of Malta issued the following statement during their meeting at The Hague, Netherland, on October, 12th 2001 in the aftermath of the tragic events of September 11th 2001.

The tragic events of 11 September make us, the Orders of St John, even more determined to continue our work for the relief of persons in sickness, distress, poverty, suffering or danger

And thereby to serve the cause of justice and peace. We do this in many ways, including providing and operating hospitals, hospices, nursing homes and clinics; providing first aid, medical, community and other service; and providing education and training in these and related fields. We carry on our work in many countries throughout the world.

We are founded on Christian principles. In our humanitarian work, we reach out to those of any race, class, creed or religious persuasion. By not drawing distinctions on any of these grounds, we strive to bring peace and reconciliation not only to those within the communities which serve, but also between the members of different communities and those of different religious beliefs.

We are entirely non-political. Much the greater part of our work is undertaken by volunteers, and much of the expense of carrying out our work is derived from donations from our members and from members of the public in many parts of the world.
