Over the last months Malteser International has continued to distribute food to the displaced people in the South Kivi province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Order of Malta’s international relief corps has stepped up medical and humanitarian assistance there to the civil war victims since the beginning of the year, with families receiving maize, flour, vegetables, oil and salt.
Persistent insecurity and regular attacks by warring factions have forced thousands in the region to leave their homes and land. With the backing of the UN World Food Programme, Malteser International has distributed food to 150,000 of the 850,000 internal refugees who have had to leave their homes since the beginning of the year.
The Order’s relief corps has been supporting medical units in Faradje since 2006 within the framework of humanitarian assistance to the country.
