Last February, over 5000 patients were given emergency treatment by Malteser International in cooperation with the local organization, HELP, to tackle the cholera epedemic that has been raging in Zimbabwe since last August. The lack of drinking water, and even the use of waste water, has helped to spread the disease that has already affected 83,000 people and caused 4000 deaths, according to the World Health Organization. The UN has recently requested international aid to tackle the humanitarian crisis that has struck the country.

1048 to the present day
The birth of the Order of St. John dates back to around 1048. It was under the leadership of Blessed Fra’ Gerard, founder and first Master, that the religious community became a lay religious order.
