Thanks to the temporarily stabilised security situation, the Order of Malta German Emergency Corps (Malteser) returned to Bukavu at the start of July. Staff investigated the effects of the recent riots on the population and the status of the Malteser project. They concluded that some programmes will have to be reconverted and run via remote control. Those suspended during the fighting will be resumed. The Malteser staff look after the programme activities for the numerous female victims of sexual violence. In Bukavu and 29 other health centres Malteser offer medical care and psychosocial attendance to the victims.

The birth of the Order of St. John dates back to around 1048. It was under the leadership of Blessed Fra’ Gerard, founder and first Master, that the religious community became a lay religious order.
