In the jungles of Along Veng and Trapang Prasat in the Eastern part of Oddar Meanchey, where malaria is still the main cause of death, the Malteser have taken over the activities of Medicins Sans Frontiers (MSF) with a wide reaching control programme for the disease.
Malteser also fears a new threat – HIV/Aids because of the recent opening of the border with Thailand, bringing with it the establishment of brothels and prostitution. To combat the risk, Malteser will open a clinic for sexually transmitted infections, to emulate the successful clinic they are running in the border town OSmach. Since 1999, Malteser has supported the provincial health authorities in Oddar Meanchey, one of the poorest and least developed provinces of Cambodia, together with financial support from ECHO (European Commission Humanitarian Aid Office).
